New BESS-as-a-Service removes financial and operational hurdles, helping companies diversify energy mix.

ABB has launched its new Battery Energy Storage Systems-as-a-Service (BESS-as-a-Service), a subscription-based solution intended to support the adoption of energy storage technologies. BESS-as-a-Service is the first in a series of service models aimed at addressing financial and operational challenges in deploying clean energy systems.
As energy storage demand grows, ABB’s BESS-as-a-Service provides companies with a pre-configured solution to adopt battery storage. According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), global storage capacity could increase sixfold by 20301, with commercial and industrial systems projected to reach 560 GWh. This reflects the expanding role of battery storage in supporting cleaner and more stable power systems2.
BESS-as-a-Service allows companies in sectors such as data centers, transportation, logistics, and commercial buildings to access energy storage systems through a quarterly service fee, without the need for upfront capital investment.
The offering includes hardware, software, and lifecycle support, with ABB overseeing deployment, maintenance, and system optimization. This allows businesses to manage energy systems without diverting resources from core operations. BESS-as-a-Service is technology-agnostic and compatible with various battery types, enabling customers to adopt new technologies without being limited to a specific system.
BESS-as-a-Service is underpinned by performance guarantees, as well as coverage for maintenance costs and energy trading brokerage fees. By managing all aspects of energy market participation, ABB enables customers to effortlessly reap immediate financial benefits from selling excess energy.
ABB is currently conducting feasibility assessments with prospective customers to ensure immediate financial benefits before the deployment of BESS-as-a-Service. This evaluation is a prerequisite for installation, ensuring that customers can achieve net financial advances from day one.
To support its BESS-as-a-Service offering, ABB has collaborated with a group of partners specializing in energy monitoring software, data analytics, and financial modeling.
