A new David and Goliath tale? But with this one is with 3D printers

Have you seen Origo?

It’s a 3D printer. It’s for users aged at least 10, maybe for adults too. It has a great market pitch—“I will be as easy to use as an Xbox or Wii. I’ll be as big as three Xbox 360s and as expensive as three Xbox 360s. I will sit on your desk and quietly build your ideas, drawings and dreams. . . . I’m not a kit or an industrial machine. I’m not complicated. I’m an appliance, like a toaster or a microwave. Only I’m purple and make your stuff.”

And it is the latest in a line of small, less expensive, for home use printers like MakerBot, RapRep, and so on. Obviously the world (or a good portion of it) is hungry for a small, low cost 3D printer of their own.

So, how will this affect the manufacturers of more capable, and more expensive, 3D printers? Will it affect them?  Will they start to deliver less costly systems? What about the affect on features and capabilities? What do you think? Drop me a note at llangnau@wtwhmedia.com
