Recently, DS (Dassault Systèmes) announced the release of SOLIDWORKS Model Based Definition application. It provides engineers with a 3D application to incorporate all the product information required to manufacture a product being designed. The primary intent is to support the conceptual design, sales, communication and manufacturing process that would reduce errors, time and costs associated with the different phases in the life-cycle of a product.
Concept of Model Based Definition simply put is the definition or information of a product in an annotated 3D CAD model. The model annotation also referred to as Product Manufacturing Information (PMI), has to be organized in a consistent manner so each designer or engineer can understand and utilize this information without any disparity.

SOLIDWORKS MBD application adheres with the industry standard practice of generating one master document for manufacturing, compliance and product information. Such a document avoids the traditional practice of generating a separate 2D engineering drawing and maintenance associated with product information modifications. Furthermore, a 3D drawing with annotations conveys the design and manufacturing intent more clearly than a 2D document which is left to the interpretation of a designer or engineer.
SOLIDWORKS MBD helps companies define, organize, and publish 3D Product Manufacturing Information (PMI) in industry standard file formats such as eDrawings® and 3D PDF. It supports industry standards such as Military-Standard-31000A, ASME Y14.41, ISO 16792, DIN ISO 16792, and GB 24734.
Main features of SOLIDWORKS MBD are: –
- 3D PMI (Product Manufacturing Information) definition and organization – It allows user to capture PMI both inside and outside the enterprise. MBD has hundreds of built-in intelligent 3D dimensions and tolerance rules in the background, guiding the definition process that eliminates massive overlapping of 3D PMI or the “fur-ball” issue. SOLIDWORKS MBD provides designers with a feature called “3D Views”, that they can use to store different three dimensional views of a product for displaying product information clearly. Dynamic annotation view allows the designers to visualize the dimensions of product clearly, it removes the ambiguity that can be caused by crowded dimensions.
- 3D PMI publishing – Ability to publish 3D PMI into eDrawings and 3D PDF, the SOLIDWORKS MBD 3D PDF is based on the advanced PRC format which is accurate for measuring and machining, in addition being compact in size for easier distribution.
- 3D PDF template customization – This template editor allows companies to incorporate their logos and support business process for creating a 3D PDF for part or assembly, request for quote, or machine part templates for remote shops.
