SaaS PLM vs the old school. Will the pandemic decide?

Why are these guys smiling in the middle of a pandemic? You will need to watch the video to find out. Caution: you have to be a CAD/PLM geek to think anything about this is remotely funny. (Scroll down for the video).

The World According to Oleg might be a better name for the most popular and longstanding  blog on PLM but it goes by Beyond PLM. We caught up with its author, Oleg Shilovitsky, via video teleconference, in his home near Boston, Massachusetts, where he had a lot to say about the pandemic, PLM and CAD companies… and groceries.

Here’s just a few highlights.

  • Cloud-based products have created a different software economy.
  • Did OpenBOM or other SaaS (software as a service) products benefit from the pandemic?
No. Who would ever admit to such a thing. Are you out of your mind?
  • “Software is like groceries”
We didn’t buy groceries on line before the pandemic. Now we do. Don’t get it? Had to be there.
  • “Change is hard. Sometimes you need an event to push people”
A reference to cloud-based applications. Not an exact quote, but hopefully the gist of it.
  • We find out Oleg’s preference in SaaS PLM vs PLM
Okay, we admit there is no surprise here.
  • Why was Autodesk only partially successful in democratizing PLM?
This will bring a smile to your face, too. If you are a CAD or PLM geek, that is.
  • “When you think you are late, you are really on time”
(This will make perfect sense when you watch the video below)
  • Other SaaS PLM may have been ahead of their time. But now, the time is right.
