Riak TS, an enterprise-grade NoSQL database optimized for Internet of Things (IoT), recently upgraded to version 1.3. The Riak TS now has a free open source version for IoT developers, in addition to a more robust Riak TS Enterprise version.

Testing and Creating IoT Applications with Riak TS

IoT developers will now be able to download Riak TS for free to quickly and easily test ideas and create IoT applications. Version 1.3 also enhances support for SQL commands, shell commands, and API.

Developed specifically for time series data, Riak TS also has a number of features that make it easier to manage time-stamped IoT data. These features include:

  • Fast data retrieval with data co-location
  • Easy data analysis for structured and unstructured data with enhanced SQL commands
  • Integration with Apache Spark
  • AWS Amazon Machine Images (AMI) support for simplified development and deployment
The enterprise version, Riak TS Enterprise 1.3, will also include Multi-cluster Replication for disaster recovery, geolocation, and regulatory compliance.

A Big Solution for Big IoT Data

Many sources of IoT data, such as sensors, generate time series data – and lots of it. Therefore, it is vital to have time-series databases that can efficiently store and query this large volume of data. Since Riak TS is now available to a much wider user base, of both open source and commercial developers, the software aims to fulfill this requirement with high scalability.

“As enterprises collect IoT time-series data from sensors, they will need fast, reliable and scalable read and write performance,” says Adam Wray, CEO of Basho Technologies, developer of Riak.

“Riak TS is purpose-built to store and retrieve time-series data with enhanced read and write performance. Extending an open-source version, enhancing ease of use and adding support for Multi-cluster Replication will make it even easier for companies and community to demonstrate return on their IoT investments.”
