Renesas Electronics has launched a new wideband mmWave synthesizer, the 8V97003, that includes a set of features optimized for 5G and broadband wireless applications. The 8V97003 is suited as a local oscillator (LO) for mmWave and beamforming applications, or as a precision reference clock for high-speed data converters in applications such as test and measurement, optical networking and data acquisition.

The 8V97003 has a frequency range of 171.875MHz to 18GHz, low output phase noise (at 6GHz, -60.6dBc at 20kHz to 100MHz), and high output power (up to 12dBm at 8GHz) over its entire frequency range, allowing designers to use a single 8V97003 in place of multiple synthesizer modules.

Additionally, the 8V97003’s increased output power eliminates the need for an external driver, further reducing complexity and overall power consumption. The low output phase noise makes the device an option for 5G and other wireless applications, as it provides system-level signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and error vector magnitude (EVM). As a reference clock for high-speed data converters, the device can help maximize system performance by improving SNR and spurious-free dynamic range (SFDR).

“We developed our new 8V97003 for the latest generation of high-performance mmWave radios, ensuring it meets our customers’ most demanding frequency range, phase noise, and output power requirements,” said Bobby Matinpour of Renesas. “With its best-in-class performance in a single-chip design, the 8V97003 is particularly well-suited for emerging applications above the 6GHz carrier frequency, including broadband wireless, microwave backhaul and 5G radios.”

The 8V97003 is now available in mass production quantities in a 7mm x 7mm, 48-lead VFQFPN package.
