Adobe PDF and XVL compression on CAD models have changed today’s CAD environment. 3D data are now so accessible, the entire team can view files at any time during the design process. Not surprisingly, though, the broader use of design documentation brings a new set of concerns about security.

XVLstaff, developed by Lattice Technology, Inc., and Hitachi Software Engineering, protects confidential 3D data. It grants access to files for external sharing and captures unwanted access to the data by tracing operation history. The product also forces expiration of previously distributed 3D data, and allows for change and ongoing management of an XVL file’s security setting after distributing it externally.

It protects an XVL file securely, much like Adobe PDF with APS. “Clients already vested with APS can apply security not only to Adobe PDF but to their XVL documents, extending management to their 3D documents,” said Lattice Technology’s US General Manager, Bill Barnes.

XVL compression on CAD models (eXtensible Virtual world description Language) is a smaller 3D data format, preserving accurate geometric and annotation content at a fraction of the size of the original CAD file.
