3D Scanning? There’s An App For That

Epic Games and Capturing Reality release free RealityScan app for iOS.

Earlier this month, Epic Games announced the release of a new iOS app for 3D scanning. Developed in partnership with photogrammetry company Capturing Reality, the free RealityScan app turns photos from mobile devices into 3D models.

Epic Games says the app can be used to create assets for 3D visualization, 3D prints, prototypes, and augmented and virtual reality (AR/VR) experiences, among other uses.

The process is simple, as Epic Games described in a blog post announcing the new app. Users photograph an object using their smartphone and the RealityScan app uses cloud computing to transform it into a 3D model. Users can then export the model to Sketchfab, a platform for publishing, sharing and selling 3D content that was acquired by Epic Games last year.

Once on Sketchfab, users can download the model for use in Epic Games’ Unreal Engine, Twinmotion, MetaHuman or other post-processing tools. RealityScan users will be automatically upgraded to a Sketchfab Pro account for a year after they make their first model upload.

In addition to its collaboration with Epic Games, Capturing Reality also partnered with Quixel, the creator of the large scan library Megascans, to create high-fidelity scans using the desktop app RealityCapture. The RealityScan app builds on that endeavor by adapting the technology for the mobile world. This allows people who take photos with their smartphones to seamlessly turn them into 3D models of similar quality to those found in Megascans, according to Epic Games.

Epic Games says that the RealityScan app will continue to be improved with “more integrations, more uses, [and] more technological breakthroughs.”
