Our mission is to contribute to the economic well-being and quality of life in the state of Texas and in the nation. We fulfill this mission by teaching and mentoring students who will enter the workplace with competence and confidence, and also by doing outstanding research in areas of importance to the modern economy. This is an ambitious objective, but it is realistic. We are already recognized as being among the top five public colleges of engineering in the nation. In the most recent US News & World Report ranking of undergraduate programs, our College of Engineering was ranked ninth, fifth among the public universities, out of several hundred ABET accredited engineering schools in the United States. Our graduate program was ranked 10th in 2001 rankings. Eight of our program specialties were ranked near the top nationally.
