Job Description:

Thorlabs Imaging Systems group in Sterling, Virginia designs and manufactures state-of-the-art imaging systems for life science applications. We are seeking a talented, experienced Optical Systems Engineer to contribute to imaging system development, integration, and test.

The successful candidate will join a cross-functional, global team that combines complex imaging hardware with integral software for image acquisition, processing, system control, and calibration. The position requires a keen understanding of optical systems design, opto-mechanical constraints, and imaging techniques.

The individual will be required to assist in bringing new products from prototype to production, with an emphasis on robust and manufacturable designs in a lean manufacturing facility. Occasional participation in detailed technical discussions with customers.

 

Required Knowledge and Skills:

  • Strong imaging system design, development and integration skills
  • Hands-on experience with assembly and trouble-shooting of laser scanning imaging systems
  • Strong optics and photonics working knowledge, including imaging optics design, simulation, and implementation
  • Solid fundamental knowledge of microscopy techniques, in particular, laser scanning microscopes such as confocal and multiphoton
  • Integration of motion control subsystems into imaging systems
  • Ability to propose creative, robust, and effective image or signal analysis solutions to challenging problems
  • Experience designing and building an advanced imaging system such as Confocal, Super Resolution, etc.

Desirable Skills and Experience:

  • Laser scanning microscopy
  • Nonlinear microscopy
  • Scientific digital cameras and apps
  • Applied MATLAB programming
  • Simulation in Zemax
  • Design of key optical components for Microscopy

 

Education and Experience:

  • BS minimum to Ph.D. or equivalent in Optics, Electrical Engineering, Physics, or Biomedical Engineering
  • Minimum 5 years of complex system integration and development
