Sensing and Ranging using LED Technology – White Paper
Sensing and Ranging applications are beset by challenges. Measurements can be affected by harsh noisy environments such as in rain or snow, or by having to sacrifice fidelity because accuracy costs too much for a commercial application.
New technology based on the time-of-flight of light principle enables the use of economic LED lighting for detection and ranging. This lighting can be either in the visible or infrared spectrum. The LEDs and emitter optics are used to create a diffused beam, covering a wider area of interest. The use of a diffused light beam increases robustness when detecting specular surfaces, and accumulation and oversampling techniques maximize range, accuracy and precision.
