In order to protect a reservoir from sunlight 3 million black plastic balls are being added. The sunlight causes a reaction between the bromide and the chlorine resulting in the carcinogen bromate forming. The balls will not only block the sun but will be loads of fun for local kids! This was done at the Ivanhoe reservoir in LosAngeles county.

Hey Odd. I don't understand the problem that's being solved here. Where is the bromide and where is the chlorine?

Bromate is photoproduced by the chlorine added to this potable water and the natural bromine in the water. Without light of sufficiently short wavelength, no bromate will be produced. The balls block the light.

Bromate is also formed in electrochemical processes, such as formation of hypochlorite ion used in municipal water processes, when bromide ion is present. Additionally bromate ion is produced when chlorine dioxide is used in water, the bromide ion is present, and the water is exposed to sunlight.

This reaction occurs in water systems where bromide is dissolved in water and ozone is used to disinfect the water, especially under high pressures. This reaction is undesirable because bromate is a suspected carcinogen

Hey, thanks. I wasn't thinking that there was chlorine added to the water in the reservoir, but of course there is to control the spread of algae.

Still looks like a pretty unique way to control the problem.

That was quite uncalled for. It's a pretty clever idea actually, but I can imagine it becoming one Hell of a mess to clean up if the reservoir clogs up, overflows, and the black balls wind up all over town.

Reminds me of when I loved playpen ball pools, those were the days. Yup.
