If your company is like most companies, the budget is tight. Your plans for that brand new, fully-featured, ground-up product has been shelved and your left wondering not only what you'll be working on now, but if you'll be working on anything at all. But despite all the economic uncertainty, there are still opportunities available for great product design to occur. The game has changed, the goal is now to stretch every dollar available as far as possible or even to be productive without any dollars.

With jobs on the line, it's important that as designers and project pushers that you understand where your value is realized. Hopefully your company is still sound enough to have somewhat of a long term perspective and understands that eliminating developers only handicaps profits in the long run in exchange for the relatively small capital injection that your salary would provide them now. Big risks with potential high pay-offs are out, and low-risk, known pay-offs are in. Your best bet is to identify these low-risk opportunities, and to show exactly how your going to implement the pay-off that exceeds your cost. Complete article... at www.productdesignresources.com

Re: Designing for Down Times

A very inspiring and beneficial article Sir. It will help many out there that are fearful about job losses or businss decline to look to positives instead of dwelling on the negatives. Any advice for those of us that might be retired but working from home to help others? Perhaps as this web site offers advice to others and maybe even an idea or two when we understand the problems involved. Great article. Thank you.

Re: Designing for Down Times

Yes, the core character of an ideal engineer is to design according to the needs and demand which are highly time variant ones. It is important that companies and professionals look on the positive side of the crisis and try to make an opportunity out of nothing. Engineers have always done what is considered impossible and they will do it again.

Re: Designing for Down Times

Exactly! I can number a bunch of companies here in my country that were ignorant to the "new game" rules established by the current economic crisis, that they almost went bankrupt from forcing their old plans and not adjusting. Excellent observation on your behalf!

Re: Designing for Down Times

What I really notice is that as engineers, we tend to be isolated (or isolate ourselves) from the financial realities of our business. Engineers need to actively refresh their understanding of their marketplace so that they not only create value, but can also provide innovation that does something for the product user. A brilliant engineer that solves complicated problems that nobody cares about does not stay in business or employed for long.

Re: Designing for Down Times

The days are gone where the engineers were isolated from the market. Now all the companies lay stress on their production team to make the best design according to the needs of the market. So the old design will not deliver what is wanted. Engineers have understood the part played by them and most of them constantly upgrade themselves technologically. This is a good sign. Making use of the technology will always give you a better solution.

Re: Designing for Down Times

Should a project be started without any engineering, and then engineer after it shows failure?

When should the engineering take place? before a project gets stared, or after the project is completed.
