The technologies are expanding from once being used for Rapid Prototyping to now being capable of producing parts for end-use applications. And how do you define an industry by the terminology? This has been a really interesting past few years as the terms used to describe the technologies and the uses for that technology have gone through a roller coaster of changes.

Engineers are reluctant to change their methods of creating calculations, understandably so. Their experience is the greatest justification for what they do. Many engineers insist they are not interested in new ways when their confidence and experience worked well, in spite of the acknowledged deficiencies within the profession. Where is the incentive to change?

"All too often, engineers are comfortable showing up to work in casual clothes or worse still, they are tolerant to working in an office reminiscent of a 1980's communist shipyard drafting-room"

Engineers, and pretty much all of human civilization are always looking for “What’s wrong”? We are always analyzing situations to try to identify a problem so that we can fix it. The author of the book states that by asking “What’s wrong?” questions, you cause all of your thinking to be done by the analytical part of your brain. Asking “What’s wrong” questions constantly puts you into a negative state of mind.

The two-way speed of light has been proven to isotropic in all inertial frames, the same in all directions, irrespective of the motion of the inertial frame that measures it. However, the isotropy if the one-way speed of light is somewhat of convention, dependent on the way clocks are synchronized. The Einstein method of clock synchronization can be shown to be the best possible convention, but it is by no means a requirement of physics - other synchronizations are possible and valid.

a healthy, but troublesome after effect: Too much cash on company
balance sheets. Excluding utilities and financial institutions, members of the Standard
& Poor’s 500 Index ended mid last year with a record $648bn in cash and
short-term securities. Companies
are hoarding cash, even the non-financial ones, having gotten their
handslapped by the credit markets but not (yet) facing redistribution
pressure from shareholders in the form of dividends or buybacks. I'm
not in favor of government intervention in the markets, but instead of
bank taxes and rhetoric against bonuses, why not give companies an
incentive to get this cash off their balance sheets? Tax the cash!
Give companies incentives to create jobs with this cash and push them
back into the hiring mentality.&nb
