How to design an overhead crane for a known span and required capacity.
It should include designing of crane beam / girder and its all accessories like hoist, drum, hook etc.

How much do you need to design yourself?

You can design the individual components and systems as you have noted in your list.

Starting by looking at existing design is a good place to start.

Cranes and component have ratings. You can evaluate the individual components and system by looking at the specifications as supplied by the vendor / manufacturer. Then you can back engineer the analysis of the components.
