The three pole regulator is at http://avstop.com/AC/apgeneral/regulation.html

The arrows around the coils indicate that current is flowing from the ground up through the coil to the positive terminal of the armature. Does this seem right or do the arrows mean something else?

Yes, The negative side has an excess of electrons. Electrons flow from the negative pole to the positive pole.
