Hi, I'm trying to figure out if engineering is the right field for me to go into. One aspect I'd like to know about is student life, particularly as a civil or electrical engineering student. What was your schedule and your study hours like? Did you ever have any free time? Were you able to strike a balance between studying and homework and other activities that weren't school related? Thank you for your input, Gabriella |

Gabriella: I was an engineering student starting nearly 40 years ago. In principle he life of a student has changed very little. There are always opportunities and time to have life beyond simply studying for the next test or solving the next problem your professors and instructors present to you. I am now back in the university environment. I am actively involved with Seniors in Engineering across a number of departments and disciplines. I see students involve with many activities that are beyond strictly academic - 1. Students are involved in varsity sports including be stars of various sports team. 2. Students are actively involved in musical activities, plays, etc. 3. Students belong to fraternities and sororities. 4. Students perform community services and stay involved in their churches of choice. It all depends on your ability to focus on your academic subjects effectively and plan your time. As part of your visits to university campuses of interest be sure to ask the students who are already attending those schools. Niel Leon engineering.com |

Well I'm graduating this May from Montana State in Civil Engineering... Engineering life is what you make it. I know people that didn't do much, and I know some that worked super hard to get great grades. As for myself, I worked through college (no student loans!!!) so my GPA isn't nearly what it could have been, but that was what I sacrificed. I had a lot of fun, and I'm sad it's almost over. If you want to know the truth, I partied hard, but also worked hard. The school work can be difficult much of the time.. There was also times where I was so busy that I had to pick and choose what I got done (once again work factored into this predicament) Definitely worth it though! Would I do it again? Absolutely |
