    Learning about frequency drives, AC & DC motors, PLCs and SCADA will be useful. Instrumentation, sensors and data transmission will also be of benefit.

    I agree with Mike, but would emphasize PLC training (not just learning scholastic knowledge/manual, but actual training). You should fully understand the PLC, before moving on to learn PAC, and then on to SCADA. Note SCADA is just a software that interfaces PLCs and other devices with human operators. A beefed up HMI or operator control panel with data acquisition. The real process control is done with PLC/PAC or RTU, of which SCADA only has very limited access to. Also note RTU (Remote Terminal Units) are just proprietary PLCs with modems or some other communication device built in. And RTUs because of their proprietariness are typically more difficult to work with and troubleshoot compared to standard PLCs. Some times standard PLCs with communication module is used for RTU.

    Another common device in that industry is DCS systems. Like the RTU, proprietariness of DCS systems make them typically more difficult to work with and troubleshoot compared to standard. DCS are being replaced by PAC and SCADA combination which have a much lower lifecycle cost than DCS, but the industry is very slow to change, so there will still be plenty out there 4 years later, by the time one gets out of school.

    Also note when you reach the advanced levels of control technology to learning PACs and SCADA, they are both targeted toward the IT and computer programer audience, so a high level of computer literacy and some computer programming will be required.
