You need to provide more information as to the purpose and scope of the investigation. Why are you investigating? What do you hope to achieve from the investigation? What type of structure? How old is the structure? Will modifications be made such that the structure must comply with current code requirements?

First you need to be clear in which side you need to start the investigation. Second the scope is very essential. The basic steps you can follow in building analysis http://universalengineering.us/stru...-analysis/ are conceptual phase, then analysis and later the design phase.
