    i would like to know which type of sheet metal joint is more strongest
    the butt joint or the lap joint

    A lot depends on how the joint is fabricated and how the joint is loaded in the final design application. As long as the joint is properly fabricated it is possible to create a joint nearly as strong if not stronger than the parent material.

    It also depends on the type of material you're using. If you're working with mild steel pipes, for example, you'd use a butt joint, but for stainless and higher tensile strnegth alloys, like titanium, you'd opt for lap joint.
