I would like to rotate a barrel from two "ears" made of 1" pipe welded to the barrel at the top edges equidistant from each other. I want to use a worm and gear to rotate it, but I don't know what size or type I need. The barrel will have a person inside it and their hips/center of gravity will be even with the "ears". I will send dwg or pdf files to anyone who would like to help.

Couple of questions

1. Are you rotating the barrel around the longitudinal axis or about the cylindrical axis? Based on your written description, I will assume the former.

2. Why have you chosen a worm drive system?
Do you need to change the axis direction?
Do you need a large gear reduction?
How fast are you going to rotate the drum?

I am trying to rotate it about its longitudinal axis. I have chosen a worm drive system because I would like to be able to rotate the barrel from vertical to horizontal and anywhere in between without the motor having to hold the load. I would like to rotate the barrel apx 90 degrees per second. I do not know what type of reduction I would need. I also don't know the size motor that should be used; I know the power of the motor and the worm gearing are dependent on the output. Would you like to see the CAD drawing? I am not an engineer, but a student with an idea. Any help would be welcome.

Worm gears are well suited to preventing back driving.

If you can provide a link to your design that would be helpful. It might induce others to chime in.
