 There are so many types of sensor you really need to determine what you are trying to sense.

There are
* optical sensors
* magnetic sensors
* capacitive sensors
* pneumatic sensors
* piezoelectric sensors
* pneumatic sensors
* contact sensors
* strain gauges

This is a short list - off the top of my head.
