the best thing I can do to answer this question is to give an example.... Myself. I'm a Mechanical Engineer.

$250 to incorporate
$18,000 est. for CAD software, computer, and other various things
$200 website
$500 Small Amount of Advertising

I'm presently looking to expand my business, so there will be many more expenses coming, but if you want to keep it small (very small)... that's about what you're looking for. But keep in mind there's no benefits, you pay for your own insurance, and you have no vacation time, unless you alot it to yourself.

I am presently looking at buying a small building or storefront, a few more computers and licenses of software, and hiring a few employees.... All in all that will add about $130,000 for the first year.

Hope this answers your question...
