Compressive stength of a compressive member varies with the ratio between the effective length of the member to its radius of gyration.The effective length varies with respect to the end condition of the member. If both ends are hinged, the eff. length is the same to its length and if both ends are firmly fixed, the eff. length is half of the length. So for a particular cross section of a compressive member and having eaual length with different end conditions, the compressive strength will differ.
