There could be several functions:

1. Incoming quality inspections. This includes developing sampling plans and qualifying vendors at their facilities to provide quality incoming parts.

2. In-process inspections. Develop and ensure processes to build items are correct and followed according to plan. This is very important if your firm wants to be ISO 9000 certified.

3. Out-going inspections. Develop and implement measurement plans for goods going out the door. This will help ensure customers (consumers and other manufacturers) are getting the product quality and uniformity they require or expect.

4. Interface with regulatory agencies. Work with FDA, OSHA, or other regulatory agencies to ensure your firm is in compliance with their rules.

5. Develop safety procedures. This can range from disaster preparations to fire exit routing to chemical handling.
