Install font called "Monotype Sorts" into your windows font repository. This font can also be downloaded from here for free:

http://www.webpagepublicity.com/free-fonts-m3.html

From Autocad, create a text style using the "Monotype Sorts" font (utilizing the 'style' command). Invoke any of the text commands (dtext or mtext) <-- all of the alphabets & numerical values will represent a symbol. For instance, when the number '3' is entered, it will represent a checkmark; '7' represents an 'x' symbol.

Hope this helps, let me know!
